Current trends have re-labeled men and women formerly known as sugar daddies and sugar mamas, respectively, to the term "blessers". According to the "Blesser Finder" Facebook page, women with morals are "missing out in life" and rarely get to see the world (if at all). More conservative global citizens would equate the relationship between a sugar-parent and sugar-baby to that of a prostitute and her client or "trick".

Khanyi Mbau, a South African actress, TV personality, radio presenter, fashionista and social butterfly, is known to have been in such a relationship. When her relationship with her blesser went public, she appeared in an interview where she discussed her relationship, lifestyle and her thoughts on the public's opinion thereof. For a while, she trended and made news headlines across the country.
